Recycling

Why should we recycle? Well, UK households on average produce over 30 million tonnes of waste and only 17% of this waste was collected for recycling. Just think what we can do if we start to recycle all of our waste. These statistics are still very low when compared to some of the greener EU countries, with some recycling well over 50% of their waste. There is still a massive amount of waste which is buried in land fill sites harming the surrounding environment and most of it could be recycled. So what can we do starting today to recycle in our homes? At home not only will you be helping the environment but you will also save money follow some of these tips:

Try to keep recycled materials separate from no recyclable waste. Cans, tins, plastic bottles, cardboard, and newspaper are just a few of the items found in most homes that can easily be recycled. Lower your wastage of electricity by switching off electrical products that are not being used. Leaving a T.V on standby all day is the equivalent of have the T.V for several hours.

Take less baths and shower instead, this will lower your water consumption considerably and save you money on your gas and water bills. Turn off the heating when you are not in. Also knocking temperature down just a few degrees can help the environment and save you money.

Check the insulation in your roof. Most of the heat in a house is lost through the roof. By insulating your roof you will benefit this on your heating bills and use less energy heating the house. You can often seek government grants to help you pay to have this work done.

Install double glazed windows. This will also keep the heat in your home and lower nose levels from the outside from the house. If you work with someone from you area you could car share and take it in turns each week. This will cut down on fuel usage and save you both some money while you help the environment. Recycling is a fantastic way of saving energy and conserving the environment. Here are a few facts you may not know:

  • 1 recycled tin can would save enough energy to power a television for 3 hours.

  • 1 recycled glass bottle would save enough energy to power a computer for 25 minutes.

  • 1 recycled plastic bottle would save enough energy to power a 60-watt light bulb for 3 hours.

  • 70% less energy is required to recycle paper compared with making it from raw materials.

Thanks for reading and keep doing your bit for the environment. Recycle as much as you can and encourage others to do the same.

Thanks for listening.
